July Newsletter | “Log of the Trail”

Meeting Announcement: There are NO monthly meetings for July and August 2014.

Watch for our September meeting announcement!

From the President’s Corner: Summer greetings to all of you.

We have had rain, and the hills are blanketed in emerald grass. New flowers pop up every day, and a humidity haze hangs in the morning air. It is a wonderful time to be here watching the dessert bloom.

And while you are taking in this amazement of color, I hope you are also making plans to attend one or several of the Writers League of Texas programs being offered in August right here in Alpine. In case you’ve missed their emails or thought they didn’t apply to you, here is a quick summary.

2014 Summer Writing Retreat held at Sul Ross, August 2-7. The cost is $329 for members. (Remember we have a deal with the WLT – you can get membership with them for only $15 per year.) These classes are outstanding!!

From the President’s Corner: Summer, Surveys, and Steering

Summer is here with a vengeance, and the triple-digit heat has kept me inside writing under the ceiling fan. Our May end-of-the-year TMTW potluck was fun. The food was fabulous, and the conversation great, including a good discussion about the future of the TMTW.

As the local members know, I, acting as president, sent a survey to them in May, asking them to think about the purpose of our group, what we can do to increase local membership, and if we want to be organized in a different manner. After the potluck discussion, six members — Reba Cross Seals, Darrell White, Anne VanLoon, Kip Piper, Nancy Beckwith, and Jackie Siglin — volunteered to serve on a steering committee to consider the survey results.

The first meeting of the committee was June 2. We started reading the surveys, finding many positive comments and a good number of ideas for programming. Our plan is to meet again in July and August, and to be able to give our thoughts to the rest of the membership by the end of the summer.

From the President’s Corner

The TMTW annual retreat will start this Friday, April 11, at 7 p.m. with the reception at Front Street Books in Alpine, TX.  Our local members are excited and busy doing their jobs this week to make sure this is another outstanding event.  We have a few slots left, so if you are a last minute planner or just realized you are going to be free, please sign up and join us for the weekend. The retreat is a wonderful place for both beginning and advanced writers, and provides an intimate setting in which to meet fellow writers and the speakers.

Speaking of the presenters, here’s what I’m looking forward to hearing from each of them:

Becka Oliver brings us knowledge of the publishing world. Many in our group have made their decision re self-publishing or trying for an agent.  I’m still on the fence and when I read things on the internet, it seems I’m not alone.  Publishing is changing every day and I’m excited to hear her opinions.

From the President’s Corner

March 9, 2014 and the clocks have changed.  My dog, Bella, gets me up at her usual 6:15, but it isn’t.  It’s 7:15, and black as pitch outside.  We’re saving daylight, for sure, on the farthest west edge of the central time zone!  Every year I grumble, although there seems nothing I can do, short of starting a likely to lose one-woman campaign for early risers.

All this said, while I drank my dark morning coffee, I started thinking about what I could change.  Height, no. Weight, hmm, maybe.  Attitude – always!  I have been working on this writing stuff for a long time, and there are days (dark or not) when I get discouraged.  I know what I want out of my mysteries – the fun of writing them, the thrill of making them better, and someone to love them enough to publish them.  I’ve achieved parts of these dreams, but not to the extent I would like.  There are times when I’m at the quit/don’t quit line.

Which is why the TMTW conference is good for me and can be for you, too!!!!

From the President’s Corner

Happy New Year!!  I hope all of you made resolutions for your writing.  This month mine is to finish the draft of my latest novel and get it sent to my readers. I’ve been working on it most days.  I find giving myself chapter goals or number of words really helps.  Even if I don’t write as much as I want, I still work at it.  And I don’t allow myself to feel guilty if I don’t make the goal every day.

While we are talking about resolutions, I thought I’d come up with a few for the Texas Mountain Trail Writers.
