Forty people from Texas and New Mexico participated in the Spring Writing Round-Up sponsored by the Texas Mountain Trail Writers on April 24-26, 2009, at Paisano Baptist Encampment. In the quiet, rugged mountain setting, the writers and guests listened to presentations from three published professional authors, Dr. Barney Nelson, associate professor at Sul Ross State University, Linda LaRoque, author from the Waco area, and Mike Cox of Austin. Nelson’s topics were “Traveling With Camera and Pen” and “Creative Non-Fiction,” while LaRoque spoke on “Romance Writing” and “Publishing on the Web.” Cox’s topics were “Research Writing” and “Writing and Riding with the Texas Rangers.”
Dan Dunagan, encampment manager of Paisano Baptist Encampment, served a brisket dinner on Saturday night, and other meals were catered by Joan Johnson with the help of local TMTW members. Most guests chose to stay at the encampment at night in rustic cabins and enjoy the close brush with nature.
This annual event is planned and hosted by members of Texas Mountain Trail Writers who live in Alpine, Ft. Davis and other area towns. Membership is open and guests are welcome. They meet alternately in Alpine and Ft. Davis on the third Tuesday at 7 p.m. Check Monthly Meetings for the upcoming schedule.
