As you may know by now from our email last Friday, we on the steering committee are sorry to announce the cancellation of our 2015 TMTW writing retreat. Unfortunately, the number of registrations we’ve received at this time does not allow us to feel that we will have enough participants to pay for the conference. We made our decision with heavy hearts, but feel it is in the best interest of our group.

Here in the Big Bend, Winter is not wanting to let go of its grip! Over the last few weeks, we continue to be plagued with ice, fog, freezing fog, and cold mornings. However, Spring is persistent and is showing herself with sunny days, warm afternoons, rains, grass and wildflowers. The bluebonnets and other wildflowers are peaking and more will soon be out in all their glory.

Mother Nature has sure had fun with us this year! Here in the Big Bend we have been basking in 70+ degrees for the last week – and more on the way! Down along the River Road, the bluebonnets are so thick in some places that you cannot walk! And it’s just the second week of February… I hope Mother Nature doesn’t “bite us” before Spring officially arrives.

Have the warmer temperatures and fresh air stimulated your “love” for this time of year? Next Tuesday we are celebrating the season of love with a special Hands-On Poetry Workshop “Poetry With A Pulse” featuring Alpine’s very own Larry Thomas, Texas Poet Laureate 2008. Come join us for an evening of poetry reading and writing – and try your hand at romantic verse. Love, after all, IS timeless and perfect anytime!

Ah! The “joys” of winter in the Big Bend! Today is another of several foggy, icy days here in the high desert mountains. But I’m the lucky one! I spent three weeks traveling to Virginia for the holidays. While I was gone, I missed the “Big New Year’s Ice Storm” that hit the Big Bend. This massive storm unfortunately caused much tree damage and power outages. Some people were out of power for 5 days! We are so blessed with dedicated and passionate/compassionate utility repair staff who worked through miserable conditions to restore power for everyone. Gratitude and appreciation are inadequate words!

Now for me, as the new year begins, I am building my “Vision Board” of my goals and dreams. It is a wonderful task to help you focus on what is truly important to you and what you want in your life! One component of this year is to continue my books series, which I put aside a few months ago. I am excited to dive back in!

Here it is November already! The air has finally taken a firm turn to cooler, even though there is still the occasional “teaser” warm day. And the smell! The air smells so crisp and fresh! I inhale deeply and can almost not get enough of it.

Speaking of November, our NaNoWriMo opening day on November 1 was an unqualified success! We had 12 attendees, including 4 new faces – as young as 8 years old! – as well as Dr. Francis and 3 Sul Ross students. Anne VanLoon expertly guided us through the NaNoWriMo registration process and facilitated several flash writing exercises that got our juices going. Many of us stayed the entire time and put a hefty dent in the beginnings of our novels! A wonderful time was had by all!

It’s the middle of October, and according to the calendar, three weeks into Fall. But here in the Big Bend, Mother Nature seems to have not received the memo. With highs in the 80s, some days still need the air conditioner! However, you can tell Fall is teasing us, with her cooler nights and daytime breezes that have a refreshing chill.

From the President’s Corner

This summer I had the privilege to work with five other members of the TMTW on our steering committee. We went over the surveys which local members submitted in May, and after three months, have come up with what we think is an excellent plan for our organization.

I want to thank Reba Cross Seals, Kip Piper, Anne VanLoon, Darrell White, and Nancy Beckwith for giving their time and energy to this work. We laughed, discussed and tried our best to listen to what our members had written. Our report is in this newsletter, along with information about our first meeting of the year which will be Sept. 9, 2014. Please note that this is a change from our usual third Tuesday of the month schedule. It will be a fun meeting, and we hope many people can come.
